"The Tail of Two Border Collie Sisters - as told to Mom and Dad ...

A note from Dave and Sarah

Bella and Fiona are full blooded Border Collie puppies. They were born on July 4, 2009 in Modesto, California and given up for adoption to the Stanislaus County Animal Shelter.

Sarah and I made the difficult decision to put our beloved companion Sydney whom we raised and loved for the past fourteen years to sleep in May of this year (2009). A special thanks and mention goes out to the Mono Way Veterinary Hospital in Sonora, California for the care and compassion shown Sydney while facilitating his death as they did his life .... with dignity and professionalism.

Sydney was an Austalian Cattle dog mix also rescued from a shelter in Monterey County, California so many years ago.

We thought for some unknown reason that we could live "dogless" for awhile - that lasted five months when we realized that despite how full and seemingly complete our lives are, the space in our world vacated by Sydney left a void that we felt painfully on a daily basis ...
Little did we know.

While our intention was not to replace Sydney's personality (an impossible task), we decided to give another dog a chance at life it might never have .. when we saw these two little princesses at the animal shelter, we knew we had to adopt both so these littermates could share their lives and ours together.

Border Collies are highly intelligent and believed by many to be "the world's smartest breed of dog". Border Collies also only have two speeds - Sleeping and 80 miles per hour... (in between they learn foreign languages, table manners, calculus and logarithims, study American history and eat volumns of food to maintain energy levels.)

Members of the "herding class" of dogs, Border Collies are difficult at best for those without suffient time and space to devote to them.

We have included on this blog some links to Border Collie web pages for you to check our before you decide to rescue or purchase one of these magnificent animals.

Bella and Fiona will post here throughout their lives as time permits - we hope in this way to inform the gentle reader about Border Collies and in some small way allow our "girls" to return some of that in bred intellegence to all of us..

Please enjoy and should you have any questions about Bella and Fiona, or Border Collies in general, please drop us an email.

Be well -

We're four months old - and "perfect in every way"!

Hi everyone! It's me.. Bella!!!!

So we're four months old now and just got back from Sonora where we had our first real examination by a doctor .. "Doctor Julie" at the very nice Mono Way Veterinary Hospital told us that we're "perfect in every way!" We knew that, of course, but Dad and Mom beamed liked parents reviewing a two legged kids first report card.... "Jenn" is real nice at the Hospital too.. she changed the needles to a different size so our final shots wouldn't hurt too bad. We licked her face!!

I do have a small problem with Fiona these days - she likes to barf in the car when we go places.. it's nasty and today she did it on our car bed .. Dad had to stop the car, get out and get the cleaning stuff out to fix the mess... I'm thinking about putting her up for sale on EBay .. I actually got the idea from Dad, 'cause he said he put Stefanie (our two legged sister) up for sale once on Ebay.

Here is a picture of where we train our parents it's called the "parent run" and it keeps them safe from coyotes and bears in the area and allows them to exercise (especially Dad!) - They're still figuring out how to get outa this thing so if you have any suggestions email me and I'll pass it on to Fiona. The folks at L Bar M Ranch Products custom made this run to Dad's specificiations for our family!

PS: Don't tell our parents your ideas on escape - lets just keep it between us, shall we?

Dad and Mom bought us some new toys while we were day boarded at the Mono Way Veterinary Hospital. I managed to rip the "indestructable" fire hose up in about thirty minutes.. I am entertaining several film offers as I write this.... Fiona, however, is still working on the stuffed cow she got.. not a hole in it yet.. whata whimp!
Me and Fiona are doing some "ground work" as Dad calls it lately ..
Here is Fiona "Miss Priss" sitting on the stump - I thought she looked like a Skunk.. (A skunk sat on a stump.. the skunk stunk, the stump stunk .. blah, blah, blah..) Dad and Mom won't let us jump yet because they say we're still too little and our bones need to develope first.. but we are chasing the ball and Frisbee on the ground and bringing them back (mostly), we can "sit", "stay" and "lay down" (for a cookie!) and we are herding everything we can gather up around here.. it's lotsa fun and by the time we go to bed (we let Mom and Dad sleep with us in the big bed) we're pretty tired... Dad says we have "two speeds" - 80 miles per hour and sleeping..

Anyway, we're having a good time here where we live near Yosemite. We are sure glad our folks adopted us and we plan on bloggin' away in the near future to keep ya'll up on the "Adventures"..

We can't wait for spring so we can go boating!!

We love the water!

Enuff for now - Maybe Fiona will write next time... (if she gets her makeup done in time...)
